Southampton University SU Feminist Society invites award-winning Dr Diahanne Rhiney to speak out on the Domestic Abuse pandemic among young people at their West Quay International Women’s Day event.

Globally renowned figure Dr Rhiney, who survived a murder attempt by a former partner,  spoke in Edinburgh last year as keynote speaker for a major event entitled ‘Generation Sext’ at the COSLA Conference Centre. Shortly before she was interviewed live on BBC Scotland by Kaye Adams. This year, she will travel to Southampton at the request of a group of female students who are eager to hear her tackling some serious issues.

This year, Southampton University is celebrating International Women’s Day 2017 by inviting everyone to West Quay and Fringe Events in town on Saturday, March 11th. Their theme for the day, ‘Being Bold’ has been created to promote and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, both locally and worldwide.

Organised by Hampshire Constabulary in collaboration with local community groups, partnerships, Universities, local authority and charities; events and activities will run on stalls throughout the day at West Quay, with live performances by Nuffield Theatre, fashion showcases from students at Winchester School of Art, and music from The Lounge Kittens. 

There will also be a Women In Science discussion panel at The Art House, as well as guest talks from internationally renowned Speaker, leading interventionist and survivor of Domestic Abuse, Dr Diahanne Rhiney. The award-winning founder of Strength With In Me Foundation (S.W.I.M) will be speaking to crowds about the importance of empowerment in tackling the increasing Domestic Abuse statistics. Also, Vic Dale, respected member of the International Marxist Tendency who has work directly with  our Pakistani female comrades involved in the struggle in Pakistan. 

In the evening there will be a music festival at the Art House, where several local, female led bands will be performing from 8pm into the night.

They are home to a body of dynamic, diverse and progressive women and I cannot wait to share with, encourage and be inspired by them as we come together on International Women’s Day 2017’
